Die Titanic fasziniert wegen ihres verhängnisvollen Endes ebenso wie aufgrund ihrer technischen und gestalterischen Raffinessen seit über 100 Jahren. Das Titanic Museum im nordirischen Belfast erzählt daher nicht nur von den tragischen Schicksalen, sondern vor allem von der Modernität ihrer Technik.
Architektur als Metapher
2012 war es so weit, pünktlich zum 100. Jahrestag des Untergangs widmete Belfast, als Geburtsstadt des legendären Luxusliners, der Titanic ein eindrucksvolles Museum. Die in Form und Größe an das Schiff angelehnte Architektur lässt mit der silberglänzenden Fassade auch die Assoziation eines Eisbergs aufkommen. Glänzend erhebt sie sich über exakt jenem Ort, an dem das unglückselige Schiff zwischen 1908 und 1910 in nur 26 Monaten von der Werft Harland & Wolff erbaut wurde. Dem Londoner Architekturbüro Eric Kuhne and Associates gelingt damit im flachen Hafenareal ein imposanter Blickfang. Die Architektur ist hier eine aus Stahl und Metall gelungene Verschmelzung…
